These decisions are illustrated in the following case study.

In some subjects, such as maths, knowledge seems more obviously cumulative, and early mastery of basic skills, such as counting, sets the scene for continued rapid progress, whereas a failure to grasp these fundamentals holds learners back (Aunola et al., 2004). In such areas the sequence between learning steps may seem fairly obvious; for example, in primary maths one scheme of work specifies the following sequence for counting, partitioning and calculating:

Read, write and order numbers on a number line.

Count forwards and backwards on the number line in single digits and in multiples of ten.

Partition three-digit numbers into multiples of 100, 10 and 1 in different ways.

Round two- and three-digit numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

Add and subtract mentally one- and two-digit numbers.

Partition, round and order four-digit numbers.

Recognise and continue number sequences formed by counting on or back in steps of constant size. (Adapted from: www.teach-maths.co.uk)
